6:41 p.m. the Senate adjourned.

6:41 p.m. Senator McConnell asked u.c. that the Senate stand adjourned until 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23rd. Following any leader remarks, the Senate proceed to Executive Session to resume consideration of the nomination of Mike Pompeo to be Director of the CIA. 

6:40 p.m. Senator Schumer asked u.c. to consider S.Res.17, Constituting the minority party’s membership on certain committees.

6:35 p.m. Senator McConnell asked u.c. to conisder S.Res. 16, Constituting the majority party’s membership on certain committees

6:34 p.m. the Senate agreed to the motion to proceed to the nomination of Mike Pompeo 89-8. (Senators Blumenthal, Booker, Gillibrand, Merkley, Sanders, Udall, Warren, and Wyden voted no). Senators Isaakson, Kaine, and Sessions did not vote.

6:16 p.m. the Senate began voting on the motion to proceed to the nomination of Mike Pompeo, to be Director of the CIA.

6:15 p.m. the Senate confirmed the nomination of General John Kelly, 88-11. (Senators Blumenthal, Booker, Cortez-Masto, Gillibrand, Harris, Heinrich, Merkley, Udall, Van Hollen, Wyden, and Warren voted no). Senator Sessions did not vote.

5:57 p.m. the Senate began voting on the nomination of General John Kelly to be the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

5:56 p.m. Senator McConnell asked u.c. that the Senate vote on the motion to proceed to consideration of the Pompeo nomination tonight; and following Leader remarks on Monday, January 23rd there be 6 hours of debate on the nomination, equally divided, and that upon completion the Senate vote on confirmation of the Pompeo nomination.

5:55 p.m. Senator McConnell asked unanimous consent that following disposition of the Kelly nomination, the Senate confirm Mike Pompeo to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency by unanimous consent. Senator Wyden objected.

5:54 p.m. The Senate confirmed the nomination of General James Mattis 98 – 1. Senator Gillibrand voted no. Senator Sessions did not vote.

4:55 p.m. The Senate began voting on the nomination of General James Mattis to be Secretary of Defense.

4:54 p.m. Senator Durbin spoke about the Pompeo nomination.

4:51 p.m. Senator Burr spoke on the Pompeo nomination.

4:50 p.m. Senator Leahy spoke supporting General Mattis and voiced concerns on Congressman Pompeo.

4:49 p.m. Senator McCain spoke supporting General Mattis.

4;45 p.m. Senator Wyden raised concerns regarding the nomination of Congressman Pompeo.

4:44 p.m. Senator Reed spoke supporting the nomination of General Mattis.

4:34 p.m. Senator McCain and Cornyn spoke on nomination of James Mattis and the nomination of the CIA director.

4:29 p.m. Senator McConnell asked u.c. to consider Dept. of Defense nomination of General James Mattis and Dept. of Homeland Security nomination of General John Kelly and that there be 20 minutes of debate equally divided, and at the conclusion of debate the Senate vote on the nominations.

4:21 p.m. Senator Schumer spoke about the Inauguration and nominations.

4:11 p.m. Senator Durbin spoke about nominations.

4:03 p.m. Majority Leader McConnell spoke about the Inauguration and confirmation process.
