5:02 p.m. The Senate stands adjourned until 3:00 p.m. on January 13, 2025. Following Leader remarks, the Senate will resume consideration of the Motion to Proceed to S.5, the Lake Riley Act, post cloture.

At 5:30 p.m. the Senate will vote on the Motion to Proceed to S.5, the Laken Riley Act.

5:00 p.m. Majority Leader Thune received consent for the following:

  • Under Rule XIV, H.R. 23, Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, received its first reading.
  • Agreed to by unanimous consent: S.Res.19 Honoring the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter and Commending President Jimmy Carter for his lifelong career of public service, humanitarian leadership, diplomacy, and courageous advocacy

4:38 p.m. Senator Moran spoke on the Haskell Indian Nation University and campus safety. He then requested public comment and input on his drafted legislation, the Marker bill.

4:00 p.m. Senator Cramer also paid tribute to the North Dakota Bisons.

3:48 p.m. Senator Hoeven paid tribute to the 2024 NCAA National Champions, the North Dakota State University Bisons.

3:32 p.m. The Senate invoked cloture on the motion to proceed to S. 5, the Laken Riley Act, 84-9.
Voting no: Booker, Hirono, Kim, Markey, Merkley, Sanders, Schatz, Smith & Warren.
Not voting: Hassan, Murkowski, Murphy, Murray, Padilla & Schiff.

2:53 p.m. The Senate is now voting on cloture of the motion to proceed to S. 5, the Laken Riley Act.

2:49 p.m. President Pro Tempore Grassley spoke in support of S. 5, the Laken Riley Act.

2:41 p.m. Senator Britt spoke in support of S. 5, the Laken Riley Act.

1:30 p.m. Majority Whip Barrasso spoke on S.5 Laken Riley Act and bipartisanship.

1:13 p.m. Democratic Leader Schumer spoke on the wildfires in southern California. He then discussed the upcoming vote on S.5, the Laken Riley Act, federal tax policies, and this afternoon’s Senate Democrat press conference. He also spoke on President-elect Trump’s cabinet nominations. Finally, he paid tribute to his health policy advisor Matt Fuentes.

1:07 p.m. Majority Leader Thune spoke on President-elect Trump’s cabinet nominations.

1:00 p.m. President Pro Tempore Grassley honored National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

The Senate will convene at 1:00 p.m. After the prayer and pledge, morning business will expire and the cloture vote with respect to the motion to proceed to calendar, S. 5 will occur at 3:00 p.m.
