6:55 p.m. The Senate adjourned until tomorrow September 9th 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Following leader remarks, the Senate will resume consideration of the Abelson nomination post cloture.

At 11:30 a.m. the Senate will vote on the following
• Confirmation of Adam Abelson to be a District Judge for the District of Maryland.
• Motion to invoke cloture on Jeannette A. Vargas to be United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Following the vote the Senate will recess until 2:15 p.m. to allow for the weekly caucus lunches.

At 2:15 p.m., if cloture is invoked, the Senate will vote on confirmation of the the Vargas nomination.

6:46 p.m. Senator Warnock paid tribute to the victims of the school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.

6:44 p.m. Majority Leader Schumer stared wrap up:

  • Passed by unanimous consent- H. Con. Res. 126,  Authorizing the use of the rotunda of the Capitol for a ceremony to award posthumously a Congressional Gold Medal in commemoration to the servicemembers who perished in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021, during the evacuation of citizens of the United States and Afghan allies at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
  • S. 4973, A bill to reassert the constitutional authority of Congress to determine the general applicability of the criminal laws of the United States, and for other purposes, was placed on the Calendar under Rule XIV.

6:37 p.m. By a vote of 50-40, the Senate invoked cloture on the nomination of Adam Abelson to be a District Judge for the District of Maryland.

  • Senators Collins and Graham voted in favor
  • Senators Murkowski, Padilla, Risch, Rounds, Rubio, Scott (SC), Sinema, Sullivan, Vance and Whitehouse did not vote

5:30 p.m. The Senate began a roll call vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the nomination of Adam Abelson to be a District Judge for the District of Maryland.

5:16 p.m. Senators Cardin and Van Hollen spoke supporting the Abelson nomination.

5:10 p.m. Senator Moran spoke against the Department of Energy proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor and

5:06 p.m. Majority Leader Schumer filed cloture on the following

  • Mary Kay Lanthier, of Vermont, to be United States District Judge for the District of Vermont
  • Laura Margarete Provinzino, of Minnesota, to be United States District Judge for the District of Minnesota

5:04 p.m. Leader Schumer welcomed incoming Senator-designee George Helmy, of New Jersey.

4:32 p.m. Senator Cornyn spoke about the appropriations bills, the Senate schedule, the NDAA and FASFA.

4:22 p.m. Senator Grassley spoke about his annual 99 County Meetings during August Recess.

4:10 p.m. Majority Leader Schumer spoke about the Senate Schedule, Senator-Designee George Helmy, Government Funding, the Farm Bill and Transit.

3:12 p.m. Senator Durbin spoke about bank loans and a trip to India with former Rep. Mike Synar (D-Okla.).

3:04 p.m. Republican Leader McConnell spoke about the shooting in Kentucky, spending and the War in Ukraine.
